This distinctive marking - the white patch on the top of Luna's head is called Krunet - although I think she could also be considered Moget, as that indicates white around the mouth & ears. (I love her little white Elvis Presley sideburns too.) John moved Regina & the babies outside yesterday - If it's not raining, I'm going to take a lawn chair out into the pasture and see if I can get some more pictures -

I heard them say they were going to name the little girl Luna, after the full moon this week. Mamma thought Harley would be a good name for the boy, but dad says he isn't big enough to be a Harley - (he only weighed 3#4 oz) - Dad says we're gonna call him Scooter

Luna is brown, but she'll turn light colored like her daddy Thorson real soon - she has funny spots on her ears.

Hey sis , a little warm milk sounds pretty good about now - what is that green stringy stuff that mom is eating?

Regina is a good mom - everyone is all dried off now, but that heat lamp the farmer just plugged in sure feels good.

Oh, Oh, Neelix - here come the vishus sheep back into the barn - do you see the angel spots on this picture - They only show up when there are special doin's out in the barn.

Guess it's time to get out of here - they don't need my help any more.

Dinner, interrupted.....

One of our favorite Sunday night suppers is turkey legs - they are CHEAP - generally only .99/lb. and John can snack on them the next few days and then I can make soup with the bones - Just turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy and peas. Yum, comfort food - Oh, wait a minute - don't start mashing those potatoes - John thinks that Regina has gone into labor and we have to go put up the lambing jug (pen) - Ok, lids on everything and head off to the barn. Got the jug up, nothing happening, so back in to a somewhat lukewarm dinner - oh well, that's what microwaves are for - BUT! at about 10:30 - John went out to check on them and - ta da - Houston, we have babies! Here he is drying off the little boy - A ewe lamb - her name is Luna and we haven't decided what to name the little guy yet - it will probably come to one of us in a dream....

Anyhow, you'll get more pics in the next day or two - it's been a very long day, it's almost 1:00 a.m. and I have to work tomorrow

Pondering sheep butts

Ah, yup, that's what I said - Pondering sheep butts.


However I thought it would be more polite to show you the beautiful daffodils that are blooming in our yard, before we get down to business.



And, drum roll please, for the first time in six weeks, we had a drug free day! Just a couple of Advil liqui-gels to combat the achey back! Now, could someone please explain to him WHY he cannot go picking up things that are heavier than a darn gallon of milk - We've had several impassioned (on my part, anyhow) conversations on how he needs to let his back heal before he starts being mr muscleman again & it's beginning to get a little stale...



Anyhow, back to the subject at hand...

Of course, the first place that John wanted to go, after he was "Up & attem" from his surgery was the barn - does that surprise anyone? One of the primary reasons was to teach me what to look for as Regina & Susie get more & more pregnant -

Here's my chores helper - for some reason Neelix just loves chicken scratch - put a little pile of it on the top of the feed bins and he'll munch it down

Here they are - Sheep butts - Lookin pretty pregnant - of course poor Anna D (in the center, just WANTS to be pregnant - a case of mastitis that has since cleared itself, kept her off the dance floor this year -) Isn't she the prettiest color?


















Oh, Regina, how rude of me, I should have gotten the hay crumbs off your face before I took your picture - yes, I know it feels good to itch you there... and there too, huh?




Regina is probably the friendliest of our girls - although she is highly motivated by scritches - and would gladly keep me held hostage for hours, "oh, rub there, that's the spot" - I think she is probably about a week away - she isn't walking in circles and gnashing her teeth yet - then I'll know that we'd better set up the jug (pen) - Ruben got the panels out of the greenhouse for me last weekend - now we'll have to figure out how to put them together without John lifting anything - poor guy, we're going to drive each other nuts over that one, I can see it coming.

But we had a good day - not only a drug free one, but a trip to Home Depot, Farmer's Co-op, the grocery store AND the Hilltop for lunch - (yum) And a nap to boot. Made black bean soup for dinner - maybe I'll write down the recipe before I forget it - it was pretty good!

That's all I've got to say for now - It's past time to go to bed, and I have church in the morning -I'd like to take the day off, but it's the newsletter deadline, and I suppose I'd better be there to collect any stray notices, etc.

Spring has sprung

The flowering plum is in bloom - and it smells so sweet - and the frogs are chirping at night - so loud it is almost deafening. The man in the moon was sleeping in a very skinny hammock tonight and there, can you hear it? "Brrrrr" (make sure you roll your tongue when you say it - "BRRRRRRR" From one side of the house to the other - like a little bitty jackhammer! "BRRRRRRR")

Yes, the woodpecker has arrived and he is looking for a girlfriend - how better to announce your arrival in the neighborhood than to beat on the vent covers of the houses - it echoes so sweetly - surely all the lady woodpeckers in the whole dang area will hear "BRRRRRRRR"

And look, he got a big purple bug to run out of that house - wait a minute, why is she yelling and throwing rocks - Maybe better fly over to that tree and laugh at her "Aaak, aaak, aaak, aaak, aaak!" Oh, and HAPPY FIRST DAY OF SPRING!!!

Neelix is taking a break from guarding the hallway to our bedroom by checking out the newly blooming crocus (croci?) in the front yard

He also supervises my trips to the barn to make sure that I do the chores correctly.

But his favorite job is sleeping - and yes, he does look like a big upside down dustmop, doesn't he?

Sinda, on the other hand, has totally supervised the bedroom. She has barely left John's side and when she does, it's with complaint, and you surely shall know about it. Poor thing, she has such a hard life - ha, ha, ha...

But soon, their work shall be done - John is improving, seems by the hour - (he's presently planning a little work party for Saturday) - we'll keep you posted, won't we kids.

Patient update

Quick update - My sisters came yesterday to help & cheer me up - mission accomplished. John actually ate dinner with us, while SITTING AT THE KITCHEN COUNTER! This a.m. he was up and around, had breakfast out in the kitchen & was talking & planning about when he could go back to work when I left to come to work myself. YaHOO! A light at the end of the tunnel.

Home again, home again......

Real quick to let you know that (as far as Dr. Baker was concerned) John's surgery was a SUCCESS! Apparently there was a bone chip or spur and the nerve had somehow snaked around it where it wasn't supposed to be - the bone was pressing on the nerve and that was what was what was causing so much pain - They removed the offending piece of "kaka" and that removed the pressure on the nerve. They didn't have to remove any disc material at all. Whew.

A couple of hours in the recovery room and we are back home - I think he really wanted to stay there longer, but I told him that I hadn't made any arrangements for someone to feed the sheep, because I thought we'd be home in time - and voila' - he screwed up his fortitude and here we are.

I am eternally indebted to our minister, Rev. Nan, who not only came this a.m. to take him to the surgery center, but spent the entire day distracting me from the worries at hand, and then piled him back into her Suburau and brought him back home. Thanks so much Nan, I don't
know how we'll ever repay you. AND, it was still light, thanks to daylight savings time, so I didn't have to do chores in the dark.

Just the facts, ma'am

Fact - It only rains in direct proportion to how many sacks of groceries that you need to bring into the house.

Fact - 15 mg. morphine sulfate twice a day is not as strong as 12 mg. of hydromorphone 4 times a day. And boy, let me tell you, its been a long day...

Fact - Fleece does not make good kitty litter. Now, I'm not pointing any fingers here (Neelix?) & I know I should have gotten them picked up earlier...but couldn't you have just gone in the sand next to the tarp insteak of ON the tarp...... luckily there was only a little damage to one fleece.

Fact - I feel like a computer that is running some HUGE program in the background - always worrying, slows me down, makes me think about sleep alot.

Fact - John's surgery is scheduled for Monday at 12:45. Studies have shown that patients who are the recipients of prayer & concentrated good thoughts recover faster than those who aren't. Our thanks to all of you who have sent your good wishes and prayers for his speedy recovery. I'll let you know what happens.

And the beat goes on........

We started on his third refill for the painkillers today. I had reduced him down to 2 pills every 6 hours or so - but now that he is up and moving around, it seems to iritate his hip and he has, what I call "pain surges" - poor guy.





He got a card from Skittles the Ram who lives with our friends Kathy & Ralph at Sheep Thrills Farm in Flagstaf, AZ. Kathy has back problems herself and has been very helpful & sympathetic to me as we go up and down on this merry-go-round that we've been on for the last MONTH!

Anyhow, Skittles invited him to come down and visit - and I think that John was more touched by that card than any others that he has received - it was really a very funny card too, about duct tape being good for all kinds of things - putting a patient back together being one of them - Skittles dictated a very nice note to his "mom" - John really liked it (thanks Kath) - AND, he is saying that maybe we might have to take Skittles up on his invitation!

Our friend Nancy took the boys to the auction on Monday a.m. - I had a really big cry about it after she left. I'm not much of a farmer, I'm afraid - and if I had to kill my own meat - the reddest thing I'd be eating would be beets.

Well, I shall leave you with this peaceful scene from a week ago Wednesday - it was so beautiful out - I had John's big work boots on so I wasn't too afraid of falling - just had a great time out in it.

Shearing Day

Shearing day & Sunday to boot - maybe we should have something special - since we have about 35 # of pumpkin in the freezer, all in nice tidy little one # packages, I remembered a recipe that I saw on Farmgirl Fare for "Spicy Pumpkin Pecan Raisin Muffins", so in my spare time this a.m. between feeding the sheep and feeding my excited husband, I whipped up a batch. Now, I don't make muffins very often, don't have the "touch" I guess - but these were really easy (and really good too!) and they made a lot! I actually have one of those silicone muffin pans that makes six BIG muffins - (and that is the only muffin pan that I own, so I put the other half of the batter in my bundt pan - worked like a charm!) However, I digress! This was about naked sheep (I was actually going to title my post "Naked Ladies" but I thought that might get me some visitors that I didn't really want LOL)

Our wonderful shearer, Marsha, showed up right on the dot of 11:00 a.m. John was so excited he could hardly stand it - he's only been outside the house three times since Valentines day, and two of those times was on a stretcher into an ambulance!

Marsha starts out each sheep by checking feet & cutting their toenails. She's very organized and does such a good job - everyone got a nice haircut this year.

She was also very sweet and brought each ewe over for John to snuggle.

Now we have five more lumpits of wool - oops, you can see last year's lumpits stored in the corner of the greenhouse.

All in all, it was a great day, but very tiring for John. He pretty much slept the afternoon and woke up only for dinner. I went to the store, fixed dinner, ran a load of dishes, talked to my friend Kathy at Sheep Thrills Farm for almost an HOUR (thank you Kathy!) updated you and now I'm off to watch Brothers & Sisters - one of my favorite TV shows! More later this week - I'll show you pictures of Wednesday's snow - I actually caught pics of snowflakes - Cool!

News for "Inquiring Minds"

I realized tonight that I have begun to measure days by John's drug log. (I keep a log of every pill I give him & when) & it is now the 1st of March - could someone tell me where February went?

March has certainly come in like a lion - it has snowed all over western Washington tonight - it looks like we have about an inch of "popcorn" snow - it's 30 degrees out - I'm hoping that it just stays cold so it's not slippery when I go out to feed in the a.m. I also have to figure out how to get a new bale of hay down. Should be interesting.

I had a "close encounter" with Gizmo this a.m. He decided he didn't like where I had my hand, and I wasn't paying attention and BAM! My right hand is pretty - all black & blue - I am very lucky that he didn't break my knuckle - I bonked him really good on the noggin with the feed bowl, but instead of looking contrite, he looked defiant. Little shit!

The big news of the day - Dr. Baker's office - the neurologist that we were referred to - callecd yesterday and they had a cancellation for today - could he be there at 1:30 - Several things fell into play here -

* It was payday for me - ABSOLUTELY NO WAY that I could take the day off - 40 people depend on me for their paychecks and no one else knows the program.

* Nan Geer, our minister from Free Church Unitarian, had already planned on being here to give John his lunch & meds - so she was very accomodating and was willing to take him into town in her Suburau - because - - -

***!!! He walks - he stands - he sits - kind of shakey, mind you - but it seems like in the past 4 or 5 days he has improved 100% every day.

* Our neighbor John R. was nice enough to come over to help Nan in case John needed help getting out to the car. Their biggest problem was getting him to go to the car and not take a little side trip thru the gardens...

* Our dear Friend Nancy, who is a retired nurse came over to help Nan too - so here we are - all three of us sitting in the exam room with John. Dr. Baker must have wondered what kind of a deal he got into here LOL -

*I need to go to bed, as it is almost 1:00 a.m. - but I wanted to tell you the biggest news, that surgery is scheduled for March 12 - so save the date - say your prayers that it is successful -

I'll give you more news in a few days when I find out more about what they will be doing. It will be up & at 'em early tomorrow - John is convinced that he can take care of himself - including getting his own lunch (mind you - the lunch fairy will have it all ready to go in the fridge - but this is someone who wouldn't/couldn't even get out of bed 5 days ago. YAHOO!

Shearing...Interrupted

Yup, they are still fluffy - Marsha got as far as south Mt. Vernon and had to turn back - they had at least 6" of snow on the road and it was coming down like crazy - disappointing, but it's been pretty cold this weekend - there was slush on the back porch when I finally got out of bed this morning to feed the poor starving darlings (actually they were all napping, so no harm done).

On the bright side - John sat up on the edge of the bed this afternoon and didn't scream - he didn't even whimper! He did have to lie back down quite quickly, BUT, he also picked his own feet up off the floor! Yay! He IS getting better. He IS getting better. He IS getting better. (that's my mantra these days...)

Next? Ordering from the online seed catalogs. (I can't promise tomorrow, I'm singing at church in the a.m. & I've got to get John's hair washed somehow - he's starting to look worse than the sheep!)

Earth Angels

They are Earth Angels. They came over today and kept an eye on John so I could go to work - - - They also cleaned our kitchen and guest bathroom. It made me dizzy when I got home, it was so white!

Thank you Diane and Vikki - more than you'll ever know!

The shepherd is still down for the count, but he stood up twice today - the first time for 5 minutes or so - Every day he gets a little bit better.

The damndest thing is that this morning I called the neurosurgeon that Dr. W. suggested - told the nurse that we needed to have Dr. B. evaluate John's MRI and get in to see him. They called this afternoon at 3:15 and told John (who was just woken up by the phone call and in his usual drug induced haze) "We can see you at 4:00 to talk about your options" Of course, he couldn't get hold of me at work, because I'd left for the day and of course, for the first time in ages, I didn't have my cell phone with me. When I got home and calmed John down and called them back, they indicated that the short notice was because they had a cancellation - I explained to the nurse (again) that John wasn't able to walk - and so we had no way to get him in there - Don't these people listen? Like last Friday when I told the lady at the imaging clinic - What part of "not able to walk" don't you understand?

So, he has the next available appointment - March 13 - and he is on the cancellation list. Hopefully we'll get a little more notice the next time - hopefully by the next time, he'll be ambulatory and able to sit in the car.

Well, I really want to go watch the end of Law & Order, but I'm pooped and I think I'll go to bed. Our minister is going to stop by tomorrow as well as another couple - hope it lifts his spirits. Later - T.

Houston, we have lift off!

Or, otherwise speaking, he stood on his own two legs, with out yelps of pain or anything - for almost two minutes! Yeah! Giant blessings for small steps - each day he's getting a little better!

Truthfully, it is easy for me to see how caregivers can so easily mistreat the ones they are taking care of - that person is so dependant upon you, it is frightening! And exhausting - I got up a little late this a.m. - (7:45!) - the sheep are used to getting fed at "0-dark-30" but they must have decided to sleep in this a.m. too, because when I got out to the barn they were all snoozing away - and gave me this look, like "what are you doing out here so early!" I came back in, got John some cereal & did a few things around the house - at 9:00 I decided that I needed to lay down - just for a little bit - Gave DH the paper to read, but he was snoring before I could get to sleep - and we didn't wake up until 10:45! And even then, I felt like I could sleep for another day!

Our friend Nancy came over this afternoon. It cheered him to have someone new to tell his story to, and she is going to come over on Friday at noon to help us with shearing. John is bound and determined that he will be out there to watch - maybe that is the one thing we need for him to get better - do you think?

Back to work tomorrow - let's hope that shearing day anticipation does its magic!

We are done with Day 5.....

and he's getting a little bit better every day - he doesn't think so, but tonight he scootched himself up in the bed and he didn't scream - to me that was a huge deal! I count every little thing as a success.

Of course, being on drugs, his mind is working way overtime - so far he has sold the truck, gotten rid of the boys, and several other things that I can't remember right now. It is hard not to laugh sometimes, like when he looked at me after sleeping about an hour yesterday morning and said, with all honesty - "I think that is the longest I've slept in days" - Ok honey, yup, you're right, is all I can say...

He's been eating well and drinking lots of water, pees alot, but still hasn't done, well you know - since Tuesday. Our friend Nancy, who is a retired nurse told me to buy a "fracture pan" - it is a bed pan that is shaped kind of like a dustpan - just slips under you butt and there you go, so to speak - I've been giving him those "red gel pills" but so far nothing has happened. I gave him the heavy artillery - Prune juice - this evening - boy he didn't like that one bit - but he did drink most of it. I don't want to comprehend the alternative if that doesn't work - and don't you DARE breathe a word to him that I put this on my blog - he would kill me - (and at this point, they'd have to bring him to the funeral on a gurney) - Sorry - I'm starting to get a very wierd sense of humor about the whole thing.

But I'm very lucky - John's boss came today with eight bales of hay - they are safely tucked in the barn - while he was doing that, I watered the greenhouse and after he left, I took a rake to the front pathway where the gurneys from the ambulances had left ruts. The weather has been pretty good - 50's during the day and only in the low 40's at night - it could be like my friend Kathy in Flagstaff - http://www.sheepthrillsfarm.com/ They had gotten a load of moldy hay and had to clean out their entire barn! And it's only in the 20's there at night, so everything is frozen brick solid! That's when I'd be saying - hey, I didn't sign on for this tour of duty!

Our friends Diane and Vicki from church are going to come on Tuesday and give him his lunch & mid day meds so I can go to work and not worry. Bless their hearts, they are going to do some house cleaning for me too. I am embarassed to tell you, I am a horrific housekeeper - things just seem to get away from me - hopefully they will still speak to me afterwards! They are going to do some weeding out in the yard too - that will really help ease John's mind. But he needs to hurry up and get well - the crocus are blooming!

I hate to do it but I have to go wake him up to give him his night time meds. I don't want him to get behind on the pain pills - then neither one of us will get any sleep. Gotta go - later. T.

Update on John

Well, we got him to the hospital for his MRI this a.m. - Instead of just going, having the MRI & having them read it some time this weekend & get the report to our GP on Monday, I told them that depending upon what it showed, we might want to admit him to the hospital. So, we had to wait a bit, but we got the results today. The good news is that there was nothing really "bad" - he now knows that he won't "die or sever a nerve" by getting up and getting around - the bad news was it showed a herniated disc in L1 & L2, & when I talked with his GP, he didn't feel that the problem was severe enough to admit him to the hospital - $1000 a day to have someone bring him a bed pan and give him his meds. Well I can do that, & I am free. His regular chiropractor, (who was nice enough to call today on his lunch hour while he is in Seattle for a conference) got the info too and he is going to probably give us a call tonight or tomorrow. John just loves this guy and I'm thinking that if Dr. K. says, "OK, buddy, it's time to start getting up and around a little bit every day" - he'll start doing that.

John was actually much better this a.m. than he has been since we took him to the ER on Wednesday, so, I'm feeling encouraged. The sun is out today and John's boss and good friend Kurt went and picked up 8 bales of hay for us this morning and he's going to bring them by the house tomorrow, so the bah, ram, ewes won't starve to death (god forbid they should be shorted on their hay - if they ate as much as they scattered around the barn, we'd be a bale or two ahead! LOL) They pretty much stopped looking at me cross-eyed when I go in the barn - but I can still get them to scatter - all I have to say is "booga booga" and they nicely get out of my way. I have been loading my pockets with animal crackers, but the only ones who really like them are the boys.

The Accidental Shepherd

This is my DH - he is really hurting right now - a combination of deteriorating discs in his back and (IMHO), bad chiropractic - I have nothing against chiro, believe me, it has kept him walking and working for years, but that was with a good careful & caring chiropractor, who was, unfortunately on vacation last week, so because he has been in pain for the last month - he finally went to the referral chiropractor - and it turned out to be not a good thing. He's "deteriorated" rapidly from the Monday appointment he had with this guy to the point that we actually called 911 on Wed. at 2:30 a.m. & had them transport him to the hospital, because he could not walk, he couldn't stand, or sit without EXTREME agony. Hospital ER doc looked at him - pumped him full of drugs & sent us on our way. Amazingly, he did walk out of the hospital, but that's the last time he's been up on two legs. Why we didn't have them do an MRI while we were there, I'll never know - I guess, because we had one scheduled for Saturday - and who knew that once we got him home, he would deteriorate so quickly. He's on Heavy duty pain pills - dilaudid - good stuff - I took it when they replaced my knee and after my surgery last spring - it is barely managing his pain. - Valium - 2 every 8 hours - (I'm giving him an extra one tomorrow before his MRI just in case he has a little case of the claustorphobes...) Prednisone twice a day -

So, he's got this MRI appointment tomorrow - How'm I gonna get him there if the cannot stand or walk or sit? There is a private ambulance company here in town but golly - they'd charge almost $1000 to transport him on a stretcher and our insurance wouldn't cover it! They said they were sorry and could see my problem, but they only paid for ambulance charges if the patient was being transported to the hospitan and so they couldn't help me! Shit! I called some friends and we were hoping that they might be able to help us - they have a Volvo station wagon - but there is still the problem of getting him from the bed to the car! - Then to top it all off, our doctor's office called at 4:45 this afternoon and the imaging clinic called them & CANCELED OUR MRI APPOINTMENT because I had told them that he was being brought in by gurney! They said that he needed to be able to walk from the door to the imaging table - now what kind of crap is that? AND why did that woman wait till the very end of the day to call our doctor's office?

I must say, tho that the nurse from our dr's office surprisingly stepped up to bat for us. She got us an appointment for tomorrow a.m. at he Hospital MRI - and then she got Dr. W. to OK that he will have them admit him after the MRI. (Unless a miracle happens overnight - anybody got one in your pocket?) I guess we're still going to have to go with the private ambulance place - but maybe because they are transporting him to the hospital, insurance might cover it. He just says it hurts too much to stand - and I already just about have him drugged into oblivion -

What about the accidental shepherd? Well, that would be me. The girls scatter like leaves in the wind when they see me coming and the little boys, well, they adore me as long as I have cookies in my pockets - can you tell I've spoiled them? I was worried that I wouldn't be able to do it because of my knee, but it seems to be handling it ok, for the most part - But this getting up early part is for the birds! Oh, that reminds me I forgot to shut the chickens in tonight - they were still out bookin around when I fed the sheep - well hopefully the boogie possum won't get them over night.

The first picture of John was taken in 2004 in Hawaii. The 2nd one was last summer when the boys were out for a "little jaunt" by themselves, and the third is with our friend Kathy H. down on the Oregon Coast.
